Getting a Dental Crown? Here’s What You Need to Know

Porcelain dental crowns can be used in many ways, so there are several reasons why your dentist might recommend one for you. Most commonly, crowns are used to restore a broken or decayed tooth to full chewing function and create a seamless appearance in your smile.

But what about the process itself? How long will it take your Lake Erie dentist to place your new crown? Will you have to wear a temporary one? What's the best way to care for your new crown after your dentist places it in your mouth?

How Long Does It Take to Get a Tooth Crown?

It typically requires two appointments, spaced two to three weeks apart, to place a new porcelain crown.

First Appointment: Designing Your Crown

  • Prepare the tooth: Your dentist prepares your tooth for the crown by altering its shape and size.
  • Take impressions: Impressions of the tooth are taken and used to create a model of the tooth.
  • Shade selection: You and your dentist choose a shade of white for your crown that matches surrounding teeth.
  • Place a temporary crown: A temporary crown placed on the tooth will protect it until your new restoration is ready.

Between your first and second appointments, skilled lab technicians work diligently to customize your new crown, so it blends seamlessly with your smile.

Second Appointment: Getting Your Final Crown

  • Adjust the crown for fit: When it’s ready, your dentist will place the new restoration on your tooth and make any adjustments needed for it to fit comfortably.
  • Placing your final crown: The last step in the process is to cement your final crown securely onto your tooth.
