Problems Corrected by Phase I

DEEP BITE:  

    This bite problem exists when a child bites down
and the lower teeth vanish.  In these cases
the child bites down on the roof of the
mouth.  Often times if the teeth are relatively
straight, people do not treat this problem.  This
could be a big mistake.  Deep bites often lead
to TMJ problems, as well as chronic head aches.








ANTERIOR CROSS BITE:

    This bite problem exists when a child closes
and the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. 
this problem should be corrected when
the patient is as young as possible.  In
cross bite situations the area blocked by the
lower teeth will not be able to grow and
develop normally.  As with most orthodontic
problems they only become more complex the
older the child becomes. 
* 90% of a child's face is developed by age 12.  
This is why it is so important to treat children at
a young age. 





UNDERDEVELOPED LOWER JAW:

    This bite problem is also referred to as a
Class 2 bite.  This problem significantly affects
a child’s profile and thus self esteem.  This
can be corrected with functional appliances. 
Surgery is not needed!  Extraction of permanent
teeth is not needed!  This problem should
be addressed in children as soon as possible,
however we can even correct this in adults
with out surgery.  







CROSS BITE: 
    This bite problem exists when the lower 
posterior teeth overlap the upper posterior teeth. 
This inhibits the growth of the maxilla, resulting
in upper crowding and a narrow smile.   







OPEN BITE: 
    This bite problem exists when a child 
bites their teeth together and the upper and
lower anterior teeth do not touch.  This can
be caused by thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier
use, or a tongue thrusting habit.
