Phase II Orthodontics

PHASE II ORTHODONTICS:

    The second phase of treatment involves braces, and begins when all of the adult teeth are present.  This traditional "braces" phase of treatment is short and usually very easy for the patient.  Patients who have completed phase I early treatment will find they are wearing braces for months, not years.  When Dr. Sambuchino completes phase I treatment he has corrected all of the major bite issues as well as crowding issues.  This allows the traditional braces to simply straighten the teeth, for a cosmetic result.  In essence the braces are aligning the teeth and making everything look great.  The majority of the changes take place during phase I, where Dr. Sambuchino is able to control and stimulate growth of the jaws, where and when needed.  One great advantage in wearing braces for a short period of time is that the results are more easily maintained.  When teeth are moved a great deal with braces over a long period of time , they are less likely to stay in the correct position, unless retainers are always worn.  

    Retainers are important with any orthodontic treatment.  We recommend they be worn for a year following treatment all the time, and another year while sleeping.

                                                                       
INVISALIGN OR CLEAR BRACES:

    Many patients have interest in clear or invisible braces.  Invisalign is a series of clear alingner trays custom designed to straighten teeth.  Invisalign is an option for many of our patients, but unfortunately not all.  There are some bite problems that it is unable to correct.  In cases where patients want invisible braces, but have bite issues that will not allow it, we combine a phase I treatment and invisible braces.  This allows patients with complex bite issues to have everything corrected without wearing braces.  Often times the phase I treatment in these cases are completed without any visible change in the patients appearance.  

    Clear braces are also an alternative for patients who do not want to see metal braces on their teeth.  Clear braces are very similar to traditional braces, however they are tooth colored, and are more cosmetic.  These clear braces are available for all patients.
